Loving Your Ghost – Poetry
for JusJoJan – Prompt: Ghost
Loving Your Ghost
(Inspired by Santa Monica – Everclear)
I see you standing there
in the park by the swings
waiting for me like always
I blink once, twice
and then you are gone
You are such a beautiful mirage
your ivory skin shimmers
as the sunlight dances
to the beat of a summer day
and your true-blue eyes sparkle
as you turn and look my way
If only I hadn’t blinked
I’m still living with your ghost
walking these streets alone
seeing your vision everywhere
and nowhere. I want to run to you
to wrap my arms around you once more
to whisper the words I’ve wanted to say
And then I realize you don’t exist anymore
just in my overactive imagination
And then I have to question myself
did you ever exist at all?
Maybe I just made you up
the perfect girlfriend
like a mannequin coming to life
Perhaps I wished too hard
You are everywhere I look
in the crappy apartment we called our own
I made shrines to you in every room
I didn’t want to let you go
Did I conjure your ghost by praying so hard?
I should discard everything and start over
find someone new, but once you’ve had perfection
it’s hard to start again
I curl up in our bed, thoughts of you abound
and feel you snuggle up next to me
For now this is enough
I cannot touch you, but I feel you
I will give you up tomorrow
but not today
