365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 29

January 29, 2016

Through the window

Go to the nearest window. Look out for a full minute. Write
about what you saw.

A once-fine brick home stands beside our house. It’s shingled roof is in disrepair. The wooden trim has decayed and the paint has chipped. The small window on the second floor is cracked open slightly – birds make nests in there. The front porch, once beautifully painted and with a fine swing, now sits swingless and paintless, its cement arches dulled by lack and time. The red bricks have turned grey-ish brown with moss covering the baseline. The once-tailored lawn and elegant sidewalks bear signs of neglect. No one tends to them anymore. Even the snow has not been shoveled away. This once-stately home is merely a ghost, a shadow. Only my memories of its former glory and those who once lived there remain here.
