366 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 150

May 29, 2016

Weaving the threads

Draft a post with three parts, each unrelated to the other,
but create a common thread between them by including the
same item — an object, a symbol, a place — in each part.

The raven perched in a tree and scanned the area for prey. Summer had finally arrived and it knew the field mice would be plentiful. It kept silent, still. Finally it spotted a mouse scampering below. It spread its wings and dived from the tree, snatching the mouse with its claws. Only then did the raven alert its mate nearby. Caw, caw, caw.

The raven-haired girl squatted by a stream. She gazed into the murky water and allowed her tears to fall within. She grieved for her mother and her lost childhood. Soon, she would be sent away to a boarding school for destitute young girls. She’d heard the rumors. The cruelty that befell the girls there. She would never again feel the gentle caress of a loving adult. She could run away, but living on the streets would also be hard, maybe worse than the boarding school. She stood upright and sighed. Six years. She could endure six years and then be set free.

The tribal elders gathered around. The young man had been in the sweat lodge for three days and finally emerged. They listened as he revealed his dreams. He soared in the air, over treetops and fields, by the river and finally rested in a nest. His feathers were black as night. His eyes were sharp and piercing. He attained his adulthood and was renamed Raven.

It is all about words. Your words are enough to shatter someone's heart. Your words are enough to make a broken heart unbroken. Words have the power to change your life perspectives.
