The Council Meets – FanFiction

May 20, 2016

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the rights to Babylon 5, the worlds created there or even these fanfiction stories. All rights are the sole property of the creator of Babylon 5, J. Michael Straczynski. These stories are merely for entertainment and are speculative. There is no basis for them in the world that Straczynski created. Nonetheless, if you are a fan of Babylon 5, I hope you will enjoy my interpretations of the Minbari culture. Much has been shown on Babylon 5 of the Religious and Warrior castes, but little of the Workers caste. My stories will focus on the Workers.

The Council Meets

“I am Grey. I stand between the candle and the star. We are Grey. We stand between the darkness and the light.”

The first time Nemara heard those words, a shiver of excitement went up her spine. She had been chosen as one of the Worker caste Satai under Delenn’s new Grey Council, an honor that moved her beyond tears. Ever since she was a child, she’d heard of the Grey Council and admired the work they did, even as her father declared that the Worker caste had no real power. When it dissolved, Nemara gave up any hope of ever becoming Satai. What she did instead was to continue fighting for Workers’ rights–they did all the work that allowed the Religious and Warrior castes to continue their duties in the Galaxy. Without builders to build the Temples for the Religious caste and ships for the Warrior caste, neither of them would succeed. Nemara lead revolts, sent out publicity creeds and rallied the Minbari people around the Worker caste. She was thrilled when Delenn noticed her work, and given the honor to be present the day of Delenn’s speech when she stated that religion and war had to exist in the service of the people, not the other way around.

Now it was Nemara’s turn to stand with the other five members of the Worker caste in the Grey Council. Dressed in their ceremonial robes, they walked into the new Council meeting circle and took their places. Nemara watched as the two Religious caste members walked in, heads held low with the hoods of their robes pulled over their faces. Followed moments later by the two Warrior caste members in similar fashion. Neither castes were completely happy about Delenn’s new order of the Council, but Nemara would work to ensure that everyone became at least content with the new arrangement. She owed it to the people of Minbari for whom they all served.

As soon as everyone was in position, they all removed their hoods and looked upon each new member. Then they placed their hands in front of them, their fingers creating the triangle that was the sign of the Grey Council and repeated those words…

“I am Grey. I stand between the candle and the star. We are Grey. We stand between the darkness and the light.”

(NOTE: This is the first of many to come and was written in 2013. Each story will be short snippets of scenes. To keep up with past and future stories, please check out the Babylon 5 FanFiction category.)

  1. Reminds me a bit of Star Wars ..

    • Personally, I think Babylon 5 is a much better story/show than Star Wars AND Star Trek. It has never been given the recognition that it deserves. And it was cancelled far too soon. There is so much that could have been explored that never was.

      • Must confess I’m not that familiar with it. This household is Star Wars mad… me not so much, although I do enjoy watching occassionally.

      • Well if you ever get a chance to watch Bab-5, you may enjoy it. I don’t care for Star Wars at all. I am more into Star Trek, but do prefer Bab-5 over all 3

      • I may have seen it a long time ago, I think, but don’t recall anything about it. Avatar is the one I really like 🙂

      • Oh yes, Avatar is great too
