366 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 136
Memories for sale
On a weekend road trip, far away from home, you stumble
upon a garage sale in a neighborhood you’re passing
through. Astonished, you find an object among the belongings
for sale that you recognize. Tell us about it.
I rarely stop at yard sales these days. I’ve simplified my life and no longer accumulate things that don’t serve a purpose, a function. But as I drove by, something called out to me. I pulled over. I began digging through the belongings like a woman on a mission. Pulling things out of boxes, over turning stacks of magazines and books. Something was there. I knew it in my bones. Finally, I spot it. Sitting beside an old stereo system is a trunk that I recognize. I go over to it and turn it on its side. Scratched into the wood are my initials. How did it get here? Would it’s contents still be inside? I slowly open the trunk and to my astonishment, the precious albums of my youth are still there – Neil Diamond, Melissa Manchester, Duran Duran, the Eagles, AC/DC, Kiss and on and on. Memories flooded my mind. I’d left these with an old friend who was supposed to put them on cassettes way back in the day. She never had and over the years, I just forgot all about them. I carried the trunk over to the sales table and then went back for the stereo system. I was assured that the stereo still worked and for $20 I took back home with me my precious memories.
How about you, dear readers? What precious memory would you find? Share your thoughts with me in comments.
