366 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 127

May 6, 2016

Evasive action

What’s the most significant secret you’ve ever kept? Did the
truth ever come out?

It involved an affair between two married people, both separated from their spouses, and both quite lonely. The woman’s only risk was possible homelessness should the affair be discovered. The man risked losing his home, his job and his children. The risk from the job was because he was an aide at a mental health hospital and she was one of his patients. The affair did not begin until after her release, but it would have been enough to have him fired nonetheless. They did all they could to protect one another. Lies built upon lies. Lies to the spouses, to friends, to family. The affair lasted for nearly 2 years uncompromised until the pair amicably parted. Until this day, there are rumors of the affair, but no direct evidence of it. Those who knew kept the secret for both parties’ sake. She never told her spouse and if he ever told his, she is not aware of it.

The ‘she’ in this scenario is me. And now, part of the secret is out. I will never identify who he was to anyone who wasn’t privy to the information during the affair (the few trusted friends).

How about you dear readers? Ever kept a secret that’s never been revealed? Or one that was revealed with devastating consequences? Share your thoughts with me in comments.

  1. That’s some secret. A burden too. I have known it to happen here and the consequences of discovery were exactly as you describe.

    • Thanks, Raili.. thankfully we were both able to move on and avoid those consequences.. well, at least I did. I’ve lost contact with him, so not sure how his situation ended.

What's on your mind? Let me know!

It is all about words. Your words are enough to shatter someone's heart. Your words are enough to make a broken heart unbroken. Words have the power to change your life perspectives.
