The Sphere From Heaven – #drabble

May 3, 2016

The Sphere From Heaven

It fell from the sky. Covered half a cornfield. Blazed for three days. Too hot to put out.

Pa said it was a meteor. This was no meteor. They didn’t burn that red. It turned grey-ish pink. Mutsie tried to touch. He vanished in a puff of ashes.

The Army stepped in. Confiscated the cornfield. Built a huge fence.

Every day, we heard screams. More people vanished. So did anything they tried to lift it with – cranes, chains, ropes. Poof.

Ten years went by. We all moved away. Last we heard, it was still there. And it was still hot.

  1. Oh lovely sci-fi from you! πŸ™‚

    • Thanks πŸ™‚ It’s actually my fave genre to write in πŸ™‚

      • I have never written a drabble. My daughter just explained what a drabble was to me yesterday.

      • They are fun.. but can be a bit frustrating too.. I usually write longer pieces and then work them down to the 100 words. Easier for me that way.

      • Nice tip. I find I am a bit long winded. I have been working on making my sentences shorter with less commas.

      • Good luck! It’s hard to murder our darlings sometimes.. I took a flash fiction course in college.. the professor kept drilling into our heads – “Make every word count. Remove the fluff.” I will never forget that.

      • Good advice! πŸ™‚ I live under the it’s never too late to learn one more thing!

      • Me too! πŸ˜€
