Last Words Spoken – #poetry #aprpad

April 13, 2016

Prompt: take the phrase “Last (blank),” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write the poem.

Last Words Spoken

The last words I spoke
came from a loving place
“This isn’t working –
let’s part ways”

Your eyes filled with tears
you refused to let go
“Let’s try again”
but we already had

The leaving and returning
over and over again
had already bruised me
crushed my bones

The love and trust, gone
you wouldn’t change
and I’d changed too much
What more could be done?

We couldn’t get back
to that happy place
before anger burnt it all
left us both in pain

The miles that separate us
have rebuilt a bridge
between hate and love
And now we both understand

  1. you wouldn’t change and I’d changed too much There always seems to be one of these little kernels of truth in your work. Very good.

  2. I do not want it to happen, I mean the last words spoken.
I have done one related go read if you have the time.
    “Healer of Broken Hearts”

  3. This is a very insightful poem 🙂

  4. Understanding is better than hate. Relationships can burn at times.
