In Defense – #poetry #aprpad

Prompt: write a defensive poem

In Defense

In my youth, my voice defended
the disenfranchised, defenseless
the discriminated, and homeless
I stood up for everyone
but myself

Later in life, my defenses
wore down, mental illness
stormed in, crippled me
I couldn’t even defend myself
from myself

Now, I defend me
my walls so high, so strong
free from harm and doubt
I worry for others, but more
for myself
