Gazing Out My Window – #poetry #napowrimo

April 11, 2016

Prompt: I challenge you to write a poem in which you closely describe an object or place, and then end with a much more abstract line that doesn’t seemingly have anything to do with that object or place, but which, of course, really does. I think of the “surprise” ending to this James Wright Poem as a model for the effect

Gazing Out My Window

I see your blue-black head
from my open window
You perch upon a wooden fence
your head held high, your wings
rested at your sides, regal
A caw rings out and off you go
joining your kind in the sky
Transfixed, I watch
as you fly off into the distance
land in the treetop
perched to scout for prey
And there it is! You dive
As you disappear from view
I turn my thoughts inward
I am alone in this cold world

  1. Whoa that was a turn around, I was all happily thinking about enjoying watching that bird from the window and bam! … now i feel lonely

  2. A touching poem, and very relatable for me. Upon observing birds in their daily ditties, I too have often felt very lonely.
