Hatched Plans #atozchallenge

Hatched Plans

“Gentlemen! It has taken us a century, but we have finally made our mark on the United States!” the lion-masked leader declared.

A group of men sat around a long table. Each raised their glass of champagne and shouted, “Hail to the Lions of Earth!”

“As we look down upon the sheep in the field, we command from our rightful place as lions among men!”

“Hail to the Lions of Earth!” the group of men chant once more.

“These sheep begged for cheap goods. So we moved our industries to third-world countries to accommodate them. Then they begged for cheap food. So we created seeds that would yield large crops, we imported food from around the globe, borrowed the water rights from other countries, and filled these sheep’s markets with cheap food and drink. Didn’t we accommodate them yet again? Didn’t we give them their desires?” The leader paused as the group of men shouted in agreement.

“Then they had the nerve to beg for their high-paying jobs, their luxury cars, and their stately homes back. They were fools!” he declared with a roaring laugh.

“My fellow Lions, we have been scattered across the globe doing the bidding of these sniveling Americans. Our power has been unseen, unspoken and unheard. By giving them what they wanted, our plans have fallen into place!” The leader pointed out the window of the resort hotel. “Look Lions! See our work! Watch them grovel before our feet!”

Outside, in the mud-caked streets of downtown Washington DC, men and women lived in huts and tents. Some toiled in fields that once held vast roadways and monolithic buildings. Some worked for slave wages as cooks and servants. Disease ran rampant. Children, clothed in rags, begged in the streets. These same conditions covered the entire country, from city to city.

Only on the outskirts of these cities could the old world that once was be seen. Luxury hotels with pools and spas dotted the landscape. Amusement parks covered vast expanses of land where universities once lingered. Hospitals were destroyed and casinos rose up in their place. Sports arenas, horse and dog tracks, and speedways remained, but no longer did wealthy athletes play there. Now, much like the Colosseum of Rome, these sites were used as amusing punishment centers for criminals.

The entire people of the United States faced conditions they’d never known, but had only seen in photographs and movie reels. Government collapsed. Martial law ruled the land. The people were no longer free. By giving into their greed, they’d become just like those they’d exploited. Only the Lions of Earth had freedom and held membership in these resort locations where they played, amused themselves and vacationed with their families.

“Come, Lions! Let’s go out and enjoy the fruits of our labor!” the leader yelled.

As the men filed out of the conference room and made their way down to the pools and gambling halls, a young, disheveled woman stood upon the roof of the hotel, gazed down upon the squalor and dreamed of a better world.
