366 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 95
The transporter
Tell us about a sensation — a taste, a smell, a piece of music
— that transports you back to childhood.
I had a black lacquered jewelry box with abalone shell inlay with a Hawaiian scene on it as a child. Inside, there was a ballerina on a small pedestal and when you opened the box, she would spin and Für Elise by Beethoven would play on a little tiny mechanical device. Whenever I hear Für Elise, I am transported back to happier times as a child when the only music I had in my room was that music box. I will often find myself humming it when I need cheering up. It just happens without thought. I will be silent one moment, a bit down and then I will begin humming it and suddenly, my spirits lift. It is the one song I can listen to endlessly. Thankfully, there is a 60 min. version of it on Youtube with a full orchestra back-up of the piano. For your listening pleasure:
How about you, dear readers? What taste, smell or sound transports you back to childhood? Share your thoughts with me in comments.
Growing up playing classical pieces on the piano for my whole life, this song transports me back to the hours spent trying to perfect every note to create the truly beautiful sounds that this piece produces 🙂
Oh how lovely! I always wanted to play the piano, but just didn’t have to coordination for it.. bravo for you!
Thank you 🙂
Welcome, dear 🙂
Not childhood Lori, but this very same song is one that a dear friend of ours, long since passed on, always played when he sat down at a keyboard. Everytime I hear it , it reminds me of him 🙂
Aww.. what a blessed memory for you!
