366 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 87

March 27, 2016

Judgment day

If you were to judge your favorite book by its cover, would
you still read it?

My favorite book is The House of Breath by William Goyen. The cover of this particular edition isn’t much too look at. A house with a blue background. If I had to go by that alone, I would probably never have read it. However, the title is what caught my eye and it is on the cover, so by title, yes I would have read it. Truth be known, I read this for a college course, and it was mandatory reading. I am sure I would never have discovered this book or the author on my own. His writing is very stream of conscious, repetitive and filled gorgeous language. I don’t regret ever having to read it. It is the most well-read book I own and it is falling apart. I’ve thought many times of buying a replacement copy, but all of my notes and underlinings are in this book and I would hate to lose those.

How about you, dear readers? Would you have read your favorite book just by cover alone? Share with me in comments.

  1. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a book because of its cover. These days, I buy the majority of my books in Kindle format, so the cover is irrelevant.

    • I’ve bought a few by cover alone, but not often.. I tend to buy a lot of Kindle formats too now. Thank you for sharing with me, Keith!
