365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 51

February 20, 2016

A plot of earth

You’re given a plot of land and have the financial resources
to do what you please. What’s the plan?

I would build a dual retreat.

On one section of the land would be a temple for prayer and meditation. It would be in a classic Asian style. With a garden and a koi pond. Lots of trees around for people to sit under and meditate. This section would be far from the daily traffic and secluded enough so that those visiting would feel as if they were in another world altogether. Perfect for reflection, relaxation and meditation. There would be yoga, tai chi and qigong classes. Meditation instructors.

The other section would be a creative retreat for artists and writers. A large house would be constructed with several studios for the artists of all types: painters, sculptors, sketchers. Lots of large windows to let in natural light. And a large library with books on various topics, hook-ups for wifi for the writers, small nooks for them to go to to read and write in solitude. The house would be surrounded with large trees, flower gardens and a lake.

There would be small cottages for the guests to stay in, both for those who’ve come for the meditation retreat and the artists and writers. There would be a large common house where all of these people could come together for conversations in the main great hall. A bathhouse section with spas and hot tubs. And there would be a large kitchen there to prepare the meals for everyone and a large dining hall for them all to eat in.

This place would be open all year. There would be special discounts for the sick and elderly who wish a quiet place to heal and learn meditation. There would be writing workshops. And discounts for students and lecturers. And for those who would want to come but couldn’t afford the standard rates, they could pay their way by performing some tasks around the place: cleaning the temple, the common house, the cottages, cooking and serving. All of these tasks would only take up a few hours of their day so they could be there for their true calling: meditation, writing or artistic endeavors.

I have no name for this place yet, but I can picture it all perfectly in my mind. It would be a beautiful, peaceful, and productive place.

How about you? If you were given a plot of land and the resources, what would you build there? Share your ideas with me in the comments!
