365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 48

February 17, 2016

Have you ever had a mentor? What was the greatest lesson
you learned from him or her?

I’ve only had one mentor in my life. Her name is Claire Born. We met at Hollins University (then Hollins College) back in 1994. We began as writing buddies, where we would read each others’ work and critique them. We became fast friends and are still best of friends. I know if I need help sussing something out to write about, I can turn to her for guidance.

Over time, she became my Reiki Master as well. I turn to her whenever I need assistance with spiritual matters, ideas for my Reiki patients, or just anything in general. I hold her opinions in high esteem, up there with that of the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hahn, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, Joe Vitale and Pema Chodron.

The greatest lesson that I have learned from her is the concept of Letting Go. She taught it to me long before I ever learned about it via Mindfulness training. If I had been a more apt student, I am sure I would have let go of a lot of things way back then when she taught it to me. It wouldn’t have taken years of mental breakdowns and therapy for me to grok the concept fully.

How about you? Ever had a mentor? Learned a valuable lesson from him/her? Share your thoughts with me in the comments.
