365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 47

The clock

Write about anything you’d like. Somewhere in your post,
include the sentence, “I heard the car door slam, and immediately
looked at the clock.”

Lady Birmingham’s Notes

I heard the car door slam, and immediately looked at the clock. 7:31 pm. I took out my binoculars and notebook. Stood at the picture window and peered out. Old man Jenkins. I made a note in my book beside his name. Watched him drag bags of groceries out of his car and enter his house. Groceries. Four paper bags. Century Mart. I made the final notes and closed my book.

I settled back down to do some knitting. A scarf for the pastor. It was his birthday next week. As I knitted, I heard a dog barking. Deep, hoarse. The Calloway’s dog. I picked up my notebook and made a note. Placed it back on the table. Continued knitting. My heart raced and my hand went numb. I loosened the clasp on my nightgown and gasped. Heard my knitting needle hit the floor. Darkness.

“What ya got there, Tomlin?”

“Notebooks, sir. Lots of them.” Officer Tomlin replied as he pointed to a bookshelf filed with notebooks.

“What’s in them?”

“The whole town, sir.”
