365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 46

February 15, 2016

When was the last time someone told you they were proud
of you?

I try to find something to be proud of each day during my End of Day Notes. It is my own way of building my self-esteem.

I’ve never been told much that people are proud of me. Didn’t get it much from my parents, siblings, or many of my friends. My partners never said it much, if at all, or that I can recall. This is probably why I had such low self-esteem. I depended on others to tell me my worth, which was a rarity. I don’t do that anymore.

If memory serves me (which it doesn’t often), I do think my friend Lisa, my estranged husband, and my friend Claire recently said they were proud of me for whatever reasons. If they didn’t say the exact words, they implied them as I have a sense of pride from recent conversations from them. In the past, I would have held on to their words like cherished mementos, but since I no longer seek others’ approval, it isn’t something I hold on to anymore. So like most things in my life, their words fade away into the void that once held my memories.

When was the last time someone told you they were proud of you? Do you find reasons to be proud of yourself? Let me know your thoughts in comments!
