The Nature of Things

Tulla was angry. Every year she raced through the ground to be the first of her kind to touch the sun. She was. Always. But Tulla was competitive. She even wanted to beat Matilda, but when Tulla poked her head out, there was Matilda, already fully grown.

“It’s no fair,” Tulla bellowed at Matilda. “Why do you always beat me?”

“It’s the nature of things. First come daffodils, then tulips and finally irises. You cannot rush the order of things, Tulla.”

Tulla shook her head, frustrated. Mother Nature had told her the same many times. Next year, she would win!

  1. Dear Lori,

I fear the crocuses will also beat Tulla. She’s definitely an optimist though. Welcome to Friday Fictioneers.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  2. Indeed you cannot rush things.
    XD

  3. Sweet story, Lori. This seems to be one of Mother Nature’s more stubborn children. Well done. 🙂 — Suzanne

  4. Children never do believe what their elders say – even when it’s Mother Nature. Let’s hope Tulla can turn that stubborn streak into something positive. Lovely story with appealing characters.

    • Thank you, Margaret… I have a feeling Tulla has a lot of lessons to come *laughs* I appreciate you stopping by and leaving such a wonderful comment.

  5. Meanwhile the Iris Society says Mother Nature saved the best for last. I go for vegetables, myself, so I’d have to agree.

  6. You gotta love that determination!

  7. Sweetly different – perhaps Tulia needs an extra dose of sh.. manure?

  8. What a lovely, fun story. Poor Tulla, always fighting windmills.

  9. So interesting, from the flowers’ perspectives. I did not know that about the order of flowers. And poor Tulla isn’t going to give up – that’s a fiesty one.

    • Thank you 🙂 Yep… tulips and irises actually come up very close to the same time.. but daffodils always come up first 🙂 I am glad you enjoyed my little tale 🙂
