365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 41

February 10, 2016

Teachable moment

You have to learn a new skill. Do you prefer to read about it,
watch someone else do it, hear someone describe it, or try it

It depends on the new skill. Most of the time, I do better being shown once and then just jumping in and doing it myself. This usually involves technical or mechanical things like operating a machine, running a cash register, or working a phone system, all jobs I have done in my past.

However, I also do well at reading books and manuscripts and following along with the directions of those things. This would include learning new computer software, cooking, or creating something artistic.

What I do not like is having someone just show me something over and over again and never letting me take the reins. And I don’t do well if someone just describes something that they do exceedingly well and expect everyone else to excel at it too just because they can and do.

How about you? What is the best way for you to learn a new skill? What ways frustrate you? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I’m the same. Show me, then let me try. It might be awful first time round, but better to have a go.

    • Indeed πŸ™‚ hands-on people tend to learn more quickly, at least from my experience πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by and commenting! It is much appreciated πŸ™‚

What's on your mind? Let me know!
