365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 17
In a crisis
Honestly evaluate the way you respond to crisis situations.
Are you happy with the way you react?
My initial reaction is to freeze. You know, that deer in the headlights thing? Yeah, I do that. My mind needs time to contemplate what to do next. Depending on the situation, I remain frozen for up to an hour, sometimes not so long, other times longer. What I don’t do is panic. I’ve never seen the sense in it. I freeze, contemplate and then build a plan of action. Once that plan is in place, I act upon whatever it is. I don’t run either. I usually meet a crisis head on. However, since I do freeze first, people tend to think I am in avoidance mode. Not so. Those who know me well know that my mind is in a flurry with thoughts, ideas, plans, and weighing all sides of the situation. Luckily I have only had a few drastic situations. And although they seemed dire at the time, I was able to bounce back from all of them.
I didn’t use to be happy with this reaction. It caused me a lot of heart-ache over the years because people around me didn’t understand that this was how my mind processes things. But these days, I am glad that I take the time to weigh all of my options first and then execute a plan.
