Much Ado About “Robust”

January 7, 2016

for JusJoJan – Prompt: robust

Robust is one of those words that has many meanings: strong, healthy, stoutly built, rough, rude, boisterous, rich and full-bodied. I’ve only used it in relation to coffee as I adore a robust brew. I can see though why it is so widely used in marketing. There are male enhancement pills named Robust, an energy drink named Robust, and even an ale named Robust. Doesn’t everyone want to be, well.. robust? Healthy, strong, filled with vitality!

And then there is the flip side of this… the rude and boisterous people who are so robust as to be obnoxious. I’ve known many of these robust people in my lifetime. They are the people in the bar who, even without too many drinks, end up making an ass of themselves. Or the attention-seekers who shout loudly into their cellphones in check-out lines. Or the co-worker who is constantly being a busy-body and spreading gossip about the workplace. Or the relative at a family function who delights in showing off as much as possible. Yes, we all know people like that.

I personally prefer to be around robust people who, much like my favorite beverage, are rich and full-bodied. Well-rounded people. Those who have lived life to the fullest and have adventures to tell. Those who drip with knowledge but are still modest about it. Those who, at the end of the day, can honestly say “come sit with me a while and sip from my cup of experience.” Yes, this is the “robust” I can get behind.

This diverse and crazy word is brought to you via Michael over at Morpethroad.

  1. I prefer those types of robust people too. 🙂

  2. Great post! Love the uses of the word! Happy blogging!

  3. Very good post about Robust! Funny it can mean so many different things in different situations 🙂

  4. I love well rounded people eager to share but still modest. I strive to be like that. I hope one day I’ll be serving the coffee to a group of robust people and experience the conversation of a lifetime.

    • Oh! that would be an interesting way to drop into a conversation 🙂 such a lovely robust aspiration 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! Cheers!

  5. That was great Lori and I learned something as well…..male enhancement tablets? Really?
I like how you explained meanings and then rounded it out by stating your preference…..

    • Thanks Michael 🙂 oh yes.. those pills.. of course they are touted as “supplements” but the jest was enhancement from the ad I saw. *laughs* I am glad you enjoyed my little ditty on Robust 🙂

      • You learn something everyday don’t you….lol

      • Some days, I fear I learn things that cannot be unlearned *laughs* but yes, we certainly do if we allow ourselves a moment of new experiences 🙂 Cheers!

  6. Thank you 🙂
