365 Days of Writing Prompts: Day 4

Quote me

Do you have a favorite quote that you return to again and
again? What is it, and why does it move you?

Yes, I do…

“Thou art to me a delicious torment.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I came across this quote for the first time when I was in college back in 1994 or 1995. It struck a “gothic” cord in me for some reason and I never forgot it.

When I first began writing a series of Vampire stories for my character, Ravyne Ramirez, in an online vampire game, this quote reminded me of how vampires must feel about their “curse”: it being both delicious to live for eternity and also a torment as they can never have their old lives back and can never get close to or fall in love with humans.

The gothic tone and vampire connection were my initial draws to the quote, but over time, it began to have other meanings… when I had bouts of insanity from 2004-2013, I became psychotic and often heard dark voices. They too became a “delicious torment.” At first, I couldn’t distinguish their voices from the voices of my muses. So sometimes I thought it was my muses trying to break through the fog of medication I was on, thus being “delicious” and other times I knew it was those cursed dark voices, thus being a “torment.”

This quote has also seen me through many relationships that were both at times delicious and a torment.

At the present moment, it is striking another cord with me in a current friendship.

It never ceases to amaze me how mere words can impact one’s life.

It is all about words. Your words are enough to shatter someone's heart. Your words are enough to make a broken heart unbroken. Words have the power to change your life perspectives.
