April PAD Challenge — Day Twenty-Three

April 23, 2015

prompt: write a “historic” poem

The Day After
December 9, 1980

I’d been too rushed to see the news
early morning, school bell rung
and I scurried off to class

a hush filled the air
heads bent, tears falling
I didn’t understand the signs

a student rose to her feet
the art teacher gave a nod
and she broke out in song

Imagine filled the air
an anthem for our time
and we wept for our lost champion

the remainder of the day
went by in a funeral procession
and my childhood buried

why do men of peace and love
get sacrificed and ended?
(in loving memory of John Lennon)
