Prompt: write a “letter” poem

A Letter to My First Love

My Dearest Darling,

On our first meeting at the hotel
You stood there, so handsome
I was frozen, in awe
No one had ever looked at me that way

And our first date
The only significant date, ever
You were the first man
Who’d ever held me that way

Your love turned a scared young girl
Into a confident young woman
Even now, thirty-five years later
You are the only man I’ve ever loved

That is the effect you had on me

You taught me unselfish love
Even when your own love for me was selfish
You taught me to hold on to my dreams
And even now I cannot let you go

What I wouldn’t give to turn back time
To stand my ground and tell you No, I won’t go
We would be married to this day
Years of bliss instead of regret
