April PAD Challenge — Day Seven

April 7, 2015

Prompt: Two for Tuesday — Write a “love” poem. Write an “un-love” poem. One or the other, or a combination of both.

This is how we love/This is how we lie

Whole nights, you hold me
cradle me, skin against skin
brush the fear from my face

as cancer wears me away
leaving me low-tide
stripped bare of dignity

at night, you warm my feet
oil-down my head
and tuck me into blankets

at dawn, you bring ginger tea
help me bathe
so weakened, you dress me

for six months I feel more love
than the ten years of marriage

with cancer gone
we go back to our norm
together, but alone

whole days, you are gone
working late or playing hard
you just need to be away

when home, you hide in your room
only the light from your computer
proves you are alive

whole months, I am bound to home
as hair slowly begins to grow
with only poetry to keep me sane

the next two years are a reminder
we were a farce all along
