Finding Courage

March 17, 2015

Prompt: Courage

Finding Courage

I wallowed in the mire
for years–decades even
allowed it to seep
into my bones
to fill me raw
yet, empty

Like quicksand
each struggle hastened
my retreat–
some days I welcomed
the sinking, sinking, sinking
a slow demise
the loss of self

In all that blackness
you waited
patient and calm–
You knew
I would claw you out
bring you to the surface

I once called you
an elusive bastard
but that was my black heart
seeking redemption–
Now, grey skies scattered
leave moonlit traces upon the bay
