prompt: write a story in first person

By Lori Carlson

            “I hate you!”

I slammed my fist hard across his face, punching him again and again.

“You bastard! Why didn’t you just leave us?”

I struck him again, this time watching blood pour from his mouth. I didn’t care how bloody he became, he deserved this.

“This is for every time you hit momma.”

I punched him hard in the stomach. He doubled over in pain and I hit him on the back of the neck.

“This is for every time you hit little Joey.”

This time, I hit him in the face, causing his head to swing back. I heard a crack and smiled.

“And this is for every time you beat us with your belt buckle!”

I let loose on him, hitting him across the jaw, in the stomach, in his ribs and across his back. Finally he lay in a heap on the floor. I stood back, shifting from one leg to the other in a kind of bouncing step, sweat pouring off of my face.

My therapist clapped and stepped forward. “Great job, Thomas. I think this is the best therapy session you’ve had yet.”

I looked over at the punching bag lying on the floor and nodded at the man. “I just wish the old bastard wasn’t dead,” I said, taking my gloves off.
