Poetry Prompt — Q & A

May 5, 2014

Prompt: Pose a question in the title of your poem; then, answer the question with your poem.

Why Jack? Why Now?

It’s been over twenty years
since I’ve run with Jack
Years since his amber finesse
has lingered upon my tongue
All my wasted youth spent
cradling him in my hands
Some moments didn’t end well
not with Jack — so I cut him off

And now, I’ve plucked
him from the shadows
his smooth bitter flavor swallows
the pain — numbness
of tongue and mind and memory
I’ve shattered my body with pills
railroaded my arms with razors
just to release the demons inside

And so I ask you,
Death or Jack?
