Poetry Prompt – The Color of Perfection

October 25, 2013

On Maintaining Perfection

I cannot sustain you —
the slightest inkling turns
    you grey
and no matter the effort
your blemishes never come clean —

I rub my hands raw
    to protect you
but the second you step out into the light
a speck of dirt clings to you
begs to be recognized
against your stark whiteness  —
you become eggshell

    I’ve lost control —
I can no longer maintain you
Your desire to let go overshadows
my need for you to be pure white —
I must accept you as ecru
or die from this frivolous fight

It is all about words. Your words are enough to shatter someone's heart. Your words are enough to make a broken heart unbroken. Words have the power to change your life perspectives.
